Synthesis
Synthesis is an immersive video projection installation that reimagines the human form as native Arizona plant species as they blossom, unfurl, and grow. Combining underwater movement with botanical imagery, the work reflects on the interconnected relationship between humans and the natural world.
Earth's ecosystems depend upon a delicate balance of interconnected cycles and processes, including plant growth, flowering, and seasonal change. The health of these systems is essential to all life, yet human activity continues to disrupt this fragile equilibrium. Synthesis considers humanity's relationship with the natural world and the responsibility we share in protecting the ecological systems upon which we depend.
Drawing upon years of experience as a competitive synchronized swimmer, the artist uses her own body, filmed underwater, to create movements inspired by the forms and rhythms of native desert plants. Just as precise timing and coordination are essential to a synchronized swimming team, the synchrony of ecological events is fundamental to the resilience of healthy ecosystems.
By reducing the imagery to shape, movement, and form, Synthesis blurs the distinction between human and plant life. The work suggests that our lives are inseparable from the ecosystems that sustain us, inviting viewers to recognize themselves as part of nature rather than separate from it.
